- Inform students of the different, cheaper ways to acquire textbooks, through the school or online
- Allow older editions of books to be used, since usually only the cover changes from one year to the next, not material
- Make the book widely available by providing extra copies in the library, office, or classroom
- Put relevant study material on PowerPoints, or link to open source articles or other free-to-use, online sources
- Pick less-expensive books to begin with
