For Universities!

If you represent a university, here are some steps you can take to help ease the financial burden of textbooks on students:

  • Become a better bookstore negotiator, securing better contracts for fairer prices
  • Do not acquire the yearly-newest version of books for subjects which do not change drastically in a short period of time (like math or sciences)
  • Make students aware of other options besides buying books from the store outright
  • Show statistics that renting a book versus buying it result in the same GPA
  • Work with professors to provide cheaper versions and open source options, mandating this if necessary
  • Consider including "core class" textbooks in tuition so that it is not such a burden on students to come up with non-aided funds
